CHICAGO REMOTE WORK GUIDE · 2026

Can a Canadian Citizen
Work Remotely in Chicago?

Visa rules, tax triggers and the real cost of working from Chicago — distilled into one practical guide.

● Reviewed 24 August 202620 data points2 key sources
THE QUICK ANSWER
No nomad permission

No — ESTA is not remote-work authorisation.

UK citizens can use ESTA for tourism or limited business visits of up to 90 days, but the United States has no digital-nomad visa. Ongoing productive work from the US generally requires an immigration status with suitable work authorisation.

Bottom lineThe Visa Waiver Program permits tourism and defined business-visitor activities, not open-ended employment. Foreign payroll does not automatically make ongoing remote work permissible.

01 · VISA POSITION

No digital-nomad visa

The Visa Waiver Program permits tourism and defined business-visitor activities, not open-ended employment. Foreign payroll does not automatically make ongoing remote work permissible.

Key checks
  • ESTA permits tourism or defined business-visitor activity
  • No ordinary productive remote work on ESTA
  • A work-authorised US status is normally required
  • US-source income and payroll issues can arise
  • Track the IRS substantial-presence formula
02 · TAX WATCH-OUTS

Visa permission and tax residence are separate.

The federal substantial-presence test counts all current-year days, one third of prior-year days and one sixth of second-prior-year days, with a 31-day current-year minimum. Canada taxes individuals primarily by residence, not citizenship: Canadians who remain factually resident generally report worldwide income, while emigrants need a formal residence and departure-tax review.

03 · COST OF LIVING

Plan on ~us$4,400/month — indicative.

Chicago's listed rent, coworking, connectivity and US$4,400 monthly budget figures are indicative 2026 planning estimates. Neighbourhood, winter utilities and lease length materially affect costs.
