For tax years beginning from 1 April 2026, India's official guidance retains the 182-day test and the alternative 60-day plus 365-day lookback test. Services performed in India and employer presence can create obligations before residence. US citizens generally continue filing on worldwide income; the foreign earned income exclusion or foreign tax credit may help only when their separate conditions are met and the required US return is filed.
